All of our land journeys average just 16 guests – small enough to stay personal, yet big enough to feel like a shared adventure, while also giving you plenty of time away from the group to explore on your own or simply relax and unwind.

On some river cruises, we may share the ship with other Tauck travelers – but your Roam by Tauck group will still average 16 guests and will have its own dedicated Roam Director, curated experiences, and a flexible pace designed just for your group.

The only exception is on select river cruise departures where Roam by Tauck guests make up the entire ship – around 80 travelers total. However, guests will be broken up into smaller groups for any scheduled shore excursions.

Our journeys are for adults only, 21 years and older, because you travel to unwind – and that's easier without the kids around. And, while there's technically no upper age limit, we've designed our itineraries for travelers in their 40s and 50s, including some more strenuous activities that may not be ideal for guests with limited mobility or lower activity tolerance.

Our guests are curious, culture-loving travelers – often still working – who crave time to reset and recharge during their travels. Typically in their 40s and 50s, they're drawn to Roam by Tauck for its curated balance: the ease of a well-planned journey with the flexibility to explore on their own terms. They appreciate elevated design, boutique stays with character, and exceptional food and drink experiences that capture the flavor of a place. They enjoy connecting with like-minded travelers but value downtime too – whether it's for a solo hike, a late-morning coffee, or a spa treatment overlooking the mountains. Not always. Our journeys are designed to give you plenty of free time away from the group – so you can explore the destination on your own, take advantage of the world-class amenities, or do nothing at all. It's the perfect balance of group time and you time.

Our journeys follow a "half on, half off" philosophy – blending guided group experiences with the freedom to explore on your own. All guided group activities, transportation between destinations, and built-in choices are included in your trip price.

About half of your meals are covered – thoughtfully selected to highlight the flavors and spirit of each destination. The rest? That's your space to follow your cravings.

During your free time, what you choose to do – or not do – is up to you. If you venture off-property for a personal excursion, those costs (and transportation) are typically not included, unless otherwise indicated. On-property offerings vary by stay, but many will feature included activities you can enjoy without ever leaving. 

All appropriate gratuities for Roam Directors, drivers, luggage handlers, bellmen, doormen, and dining room servers are included – as are gratuities for ship staff and Cruise Directors on river and small ship cruises. It's one more way Roam by Tauck delivers ease, value, and thoughtful care – so you can focus on the experience, not the logistics.

It means you get to experience each destination in a way that fits you - your pace, your interests, your mood that day.

Choice is built into every journey. Some days, that might mean deciding how active you want to be - a long hike or a leisurely stroll. Other days, you might explore the same place through different lenses, like food, art, history, or adventure. You may choose between two distinct experiences, or select from a flexible menu of curated options. And even when no formal activity choice is offered, there's always room to shape the day around what inspires you.

All built-in choices are included in your trip price, and you're always welcome to opt out of any activity that doesn't feel right for you, as long as it doesn't affect the flow of the group.

Roam by Tauck is small-group travel, redesigned for the individual. So, every day, your journey feels like yours.

Free time on our journeys is designed to help you find your own pace – whether that's slowing down, leaning in, or simply being present. Linger at the spa. Head out for a spontaneous wine tasting. Explore a museum the group doesn't visit. Or just stay in and enjoy the view. We'll provide ideas and inspiration along the way – and your Roam Director is always on hand with insight, tips, and in some cases, support for arranging what's next. In select destinations, we may even include transportation during free time – like a shuttle into town or a private car and driver – so you can enjoy the freedom to do more… or less.

There's a mix. Some activities – like enjoying the spa or sipping the local wine – are designed to be delightfully un-strenuous. But these are tours designed for more active travelers who want to feel physically challenged and adventurous, so we also include activities that will definitely get your blood pumping – like mountain hikes, bicycling, and whitewater rafting – depending on the day and destination.

Each Roam by Tauck journey has an Activity rating, ranging from 1 to 4 to give you a better idea of what to expect in terms of stamina needed and physical activities while on tour. The higher the number, the more active the journey is.

1. 1 – May include climbing some stairs and walking for up to an hour at a time over primarily level ground, interspersed with periods of standing.
2. 2 – Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.
3. 3 – Active components such as hiking, bicycling, and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.
4. 4 – Designed for fit, vigorous travelers capable of easily walking three miles or more. Many days might include active pursuits such as hiking, bicycling, or sea kayaking for one to three hours at a time. Guests should be capable of walking three or more miles over terrain including hills and rocky or uneven surfaces.

Our journeys are designed for active travelers who are comfortable participating in small-group experiences without dedicated physical support. While your Roam Director will always be nearby to assist as needed, guests should be prepared to keep pace with the group and manage their own mobility during daily activities. If you require ongoing physical support or mobility assistance, Roam by Tauck may not be the right fit at this time.

Our goal is simple: to make where you stay feel just as inspiring as where you go. So, we seek out stays that are as memorable as the destinations themselves. Every journey features a curated mix of 4- and 5-star properties chosen for their character, comfort, and connection to place. Expect boutique luxury with wellness-forward amenities and immersive activities available on-site or just steps away. On each journey, we include at least one stay in a restorative, retreat-like setting designed to help you unwind and reset.

Dining on a Roam by Tauck journey is more than a meal – it's part of the experience. We curate a thoughtful mix of fine dining, elevated casual spots, and authentic local gems that reflect the flavor and spirit of each destination. About half your meals are included, often as standout moments: a multi-course tasting with wine pairings, a market-to-table cooking class, or a dinner with a view you won't soon forget. The rest of the time is yours to explore – with personal recommendations from your Roam Director, if you'd like them. From signature dishes to regional spirits and local cocktail culture, we believe what's in your glass or on your plate should be just as memorable as where you are.

Absolutely! Many guests choose to extend their stay and we're happy to help. We'll make hotel reservations before and/or after your journey at select pre-/post-stay hotels offered for that tour. We reserve rooms at the same hotel your journey begins or ends at – no packing, no moving, just more time to enjoy. Rooms are reserved on a space-available basis, and the cost will be added to your tour cost.

Arranging hotel accommodations in the city where your journey begins for the night preceding your itinerary not only gives you more time to explore on your own, it helps you acclimate to time zones and arrive more relaxed – especially if travel delays crop up. Guests wishing to spend more time in cities where our journeys end can extend their stay – a great way to make your vacation last a little longer.
